Cupping

Cupping is one of the treatment methods used in ADB Acupuncture Hamilton / Cambridge clinic. We use both glass and plastic suction cups. The suction created by cupping breaks the tiny blood vessels underneath the skin which causes a minor trauma locally, this sends a signal to the body which then stimulates the body to send more nutrients, blood flow, and oxygen to the treated area for repair and recovery. Hence after cupping most people have cup marks that can look like bruising. This is harmless and painless, usually disappears after a few days.

Cupping is useful locally for:

  • Neck pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Thoracic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatic pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • knee pain

Cupping is useful on certain acupoints for:

  • Stimulating energy and blood flow to targeted organs such as liver, gallbladder, heart, small intestine, spleen, stomach, lung, large intestine, kidney, bladder, and uterus.
  • Detoxing targeted organs and meridians.
  • Improving lymphatic drainage

How Can Cupping Help You (based on research studies)?

  1. Pain Relief
Cupping is one of the most studied complementary therapies for pain management.

Conditions:

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia

Evidence:
A meta-analysis (2018) concluded that cupping significantly reduces pain intensity and improves physical function when combined with other treatments like acupuncture or physiotherapy.
Proposed Mechanism:
Cupping increases local blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and may trigger pain-relieving biochemical responses.

  1. Reduction of Inflammation
Cupping therapy may help decrease inflammation by enhancing blood circulation and reducing oxidative stress.

Evidence:
Some studies have shown that cupping lowers inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with chronic conditions.

  1. Improved Blood Circulation
The suction effect of cupping improves local circulation, which may aid tissue repair and regeneration.

Application:
This is particularly beneficial for sports injuries, muscle fatigue, and recovery after exercise.

  1. Migraine and Headache Relief
Cupping has been found effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines and tension headaches.

Evidence:
A clinical trial (2010) reported that patients who received regular cupping experienced significant improvement compared to a control group.

  1. Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Cupping therapy is associated with relaxation and reduction in stress-related symptoms.

Evidence:
Studies indicate that it may lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being.

  1. Management of Respiratory Conditions
Cupping has historically been used to treat respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, and common colds.

Evidence:
A 2016 clinical trial showed improved lung function and reduced symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after cupping therapy.

  1. Skin Health
Cupping may improve skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Evidence:
Some studies report better symptom control and reduced inflammation in patients with dermatological conditions.

  1. Immune System Support
Wet cupping may help improve immune function by stimulating the release of toxins and enhancing lymphatic drainage.

Evidence:
Research shows that wet cupping can reduce oxidative stress and improve markers of immune activity, which may help in conditions like recurrent infections.

  1. Detoxification
Cupping is believed to aid in removing metabolic waste products, especially after intense physical activity.

Application:
Athletes often use cupping to enhance recovery by promoting better circulation and reducing muscle stiffness.

Moving cupping is a variation of cupping therapy where the cups are placed on the skin, but instead of staying stationary, they are moved along the body. How Moving Cupping Works: Application - The cups are placed on the skin after suction is created, either through heat (in the case of glass cups) or mechanical suction (in the case of plastic cups). Movement - Once the suction is established, the cups are moved along the body by the practitioner. This can involve sliding them over muscles, joints, or meridian lines. Massage Effect - The sliding of the cups provides a gentle massage to the tissue underneath, which can enhance the blood flow and help release tension. Duration - Typically, the cups are moved for a few minutes along a specific area of the body.

Benefits of Moving Cupping: 1) Improved Circulation: By moving the cups, blood flow is enhanced in a larger area of the body. 2) Muscle Relaxation: It’s especially effective for muscle tension, as it helps to release tightness and improve flexibility. 3) Cellulite Reduction: In some cases, moving cupping is used to help reduce the appearance of cellulite by improving circulation in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. 4) Lymphatic Drainage: The technique can help stimulate the lymphatic system to promote detoxification. When is it used? Sports Injuries - To promote recovery, relieve tight muscles, and reduce pain. Chronic Pain - Especially for back and shoulder pain, where muscles can be stiff. General Tension Relief - For people who want to improve mobility and de-stress. It's commonly used in combination with traditional cupping for a more comprehensive treatment.
